PEMF Therapy: Clinical Application (Part 2)
If you take away one thing from our blog, let it be this: PEMF therapy is a foundational element of how we structure treatment and recovery at the Ohio Movement Clinic (OMC). Our goal is to integrate PEMF therapy across all phases of care—acute, chronic, and wellness—tailoring frequency, intensity, and duration based on individual patient needs.
This therapy has gained significant traction in the health and fitness industry, and rightfully so. Both empirical data and anecdotal evidence support its effectiveness. At OMC, we are committed to delivering treatments that accelerate healing and safely return you to your sport, work, or daily life stronger than before.
Dosage, Timing, and Number of Sessions
The latest guidelines for PEMF therapy depend on the intensity of the device being used. At OMC, we utilize high-intensity, professional-grade medical devices to ensure optimal results.
Anecdotal Evidence
Hundreds of patients have reported remarkable improvements. For example, cases of severe SI joint pain—persisting for over a decade—have been significantly reduced in just one 30-minute high-intensity PEMF session. More chronic or degenerative conditions, such as cartilage loss or ligament tears, may require 2-4 sessions per week over several months for noticeable improvements.
Before starting PEMF therapy, obtaining a clear diagnosis is crucial to maximizing effectiveness and saving time and money. Pain that is not related to degeneration or tissue damage may resolve with just a few sessions, while more complex conditions like cartilage loss or partial tears may require 15-20 sessions.
(NOTE: We do not claim that all conditions can be resolved with PEMF therapy. However, there is promising evidence suggesting its role in managing and even reversing certain conditions, such as cartilage regeneration. That said, if someone is completely “bone on bone,” results may take significantly longer—potentially months to a year—if achievable at all.)
While precise recommendations vary, our clinical experience suggests the following treatment approach for injuries related to tissue damage and trauma:
High-intensity PEMF: 2-4 sessions per week for 20-30 minutes over 2-5 weeks before significant improvements are typically observed. Most patients experience a noticeable reduction in pain after their first session.
A trainer we work closely with shared their findings after five years of using PEMF therapy:
“So far, I have seen 10 MRI-confirmed cases of complete tissue repair in patients with partial ligament and tendon tears. One of these was a full-thickness MCL tear (with no retraction). Additionally, I’ve treated two partial labral tears, and in my experience, tendonitis and tendinosis can sometimes be entirely reversed in just 3-7 sessions—provided the patient manages their training loads appropriately during treatment.”
This is exactly why we have made PEMF therapy a key part of the healing process at OMC. Our mission is to make every patient a living testament to the benefits of this therapy.
Our Approach at Ohio Movement Clinic
From Day 1—provided there are no contraindications during evaluation—we initiate PEMF therapy alongside immediate active rehabilitation. This jumpstarts the recovery process and integrates PEMF into a comprehensive treatment plan that includes:
Active rehabilitation to restore function and strength
Soft tissue mobilization to improve flexibility and tissue quality
Chiropractic adjustments to optimize movement patterns
Studies have demonstrated that combining soft tissue therapy and active rehabilitation with patient education can shorten injury recovery time by six to twelve weeks in the initial phase—saving you both time and money while getting you back to doing what you love.
At OMC, we are committed to providing cutting-edge, evidence-based care. If you are considering PEMF therapy as part of your wellness journey, we look forward to helping you experience its benefits firsthand.
